There’s no denying that bodycon dresses are one of the hottest trends around at the moment and if you want an instantly glamorous, sexy and stylish look that you can easily make your own, bodycon dresses are the perfect choice.

The problem is, a lot of people think that unless you’ve got washboard abs or curves like Kim Kardashian, you’ll never be able to pull off a bodycon dress. But this just isn’t true! There are so many different styles, shapes, colours and designs out there that you’ll easily be able to find something to suit you if you know what you’re looking for. The secret is understanding your body shape and knowing what works for you, rather than slavishly following trends and trying to pull off something that simply doesn’t suit you, just because Vogue tells you that you should.

So, where do you start? The first thing to do is get an idea of your body shape. Of course, everyone is slightly different, but the chances are you’ll fall into one of three basic categories: hourglass, pear and slim.

Apparently, over 40 per cent of women don’t know what body shape they are and a massive 99 per cent of women have bought clothes that don’t suit their figure, so it’s essential you understand which type of clothes look best on you. This is very true when you’re buying bodycon dresses – you might think they’re all the same, but they’re not.

Let’s start with hourglass figures. You ladies probably have the best figures when it comes to wearing bodycon dresses because you go in and out in the all the right places, meaning you can show off a small waist. Check out Kim Kardashian for ideas, as she’s a pro when it comes to dressing to show off her curves. Go for smart, dark colours like black, navy or grey rather than anything to crazy or dramatic when it comes to prints. Lace will also look really nice, while you should always ensure you’re wearing a pair of towering heels to lengthen your legs.

If you’ve got a slim figure, you need to try and create curves, so you can experiment a bit more with your bodycon dresses and play around with different shapes and prints. Something bold and bright will really stand out and detract from your lack of curves.

While an hourglass figures will probably want to go for something a bit shorter to help elongate their legs, you can work this season’s midi dress as you have the height and body shape to pull it off. Don’t be afraid to mix it up a bit with chunky ankles boots or wedges and a leather jacket for a really fierce look like Michelle Keegan.

If you’ve got a pear shaped figure, you might struggle to pull off a bodycon dress a bit more than some other body shapes, but don’t worry – it can be done. For a start, you’ll have a really flat stomach, which you can really flaunt in a fitted dress. The chances are you’ll also have small shoulders, so you should go for bandeau-style dresses to show these off.

Like pear shapes, you should opt for darker colours as these will help to slim down your hips, which are the largest part of your body. You also want to go for a dress that ends near your knees rather than cutting off halfway down your thighs, as the dress will follow the shape of your legs as they taper in towards your knees, therefore making you look slimmer.

So, as you can see, wearing a bodycon dress doesn’t have to be as difficult as you might think and as long as you choose one that suits your body shape, you’ll look stunning.
