The arrival of summer gives way to skimpier, shorter clothing. Inevitably, summer also means the return of clothing items such as the crop top. Often dubbed hard to wear, this overlooked style item receives a lot of bad press from women the world over, mainly because many people assume you have to have rock-hard abs and a washboard stomach to pull off the crop top look successfully. However, the latest overhaul of crop tops means that they are now available to buy in a variety of cuts, styles and in different lengths too. For those who are eager to give the challenge a go but unsure of what to team with their favourite crop top, I have compiled five different looks for you to choose from. So read on to find out how you can look your best in a crop top this summer with five ways to style a crop top.

1.      The off-duty look

If you’re looking for the ultimate off-duty, relaxed look this year, then a crop top could be the answer. To achieve this look, simply team your favourite crop top with opaque leggings to tone down the look. Keep yourself warm in a chunky oversize cardigan – this also helps to combat the fact that your midriff is bare. Shoes-wise, choose a pair of heeled ankle boots to pack an attitudinal punch. Choose from a selection of stylish, purse-friendly Missguided crop tops from the company website.

2.      The girly look

For all those girly girls out there who can’t wait to put their stamp on the crop top trend, this look is right up your street. Team a baby pink crop top (or bra let) with a glittery skater skirt. The great thing about this is that you don’t have to be really skinny because the skater skirt will nip you in at the waist and then skim over hips and thighs, creating a womanly hourglass silhouette. Team your outfit with a pair of pink suede high heels à la Selena Gomez and keep hair loose and tumbling. Barely-there make-up and a swipe of pink lip stain finish the romantic girly look.

3.      The daytime casual look

Some days you really don’t feel like making much of an effort, so here is an outfit that will take five minutes to complete but looks as though you’ve spent hours styling yourself. Team your favourite crop top (bright coloured works well for this look) with a pair of high waist denim shorts. If you want to try the 90’s look out at the same time (two trends in one equals extra style points) then choose acid wash shorts and a cropped denim jacket with rolled back sleeves. A pair of comfy and sporty wedge heeled trainers will finish off the look perfectly.

4.      The work look

You may not realise but crop tops can actually be styled into your working girl’s wardrobe and can add a stylish twist to the classic smart office look. It’s important to choose a tailored crop top for this outfit – team it with a smart black pencil skirt to show off your curves and wear with a pair of mid heels to add extra height and elongate your torso.

5.      The glamorous look

If you’re heading out to an evening occasion and looking to spice things up in the wardrobe department without revealing too much bare skin, team a smart crop top with faux leather pants and a chic crisp white blazer to add the wow factor in an instant. A pair of skyscraper high heels and a sweep of mascara finish the look perfectly.
